Rapid Intervention
Every Firefighter faces the
possibility of becoming trapped, entangled, lost and disoriented, caught by
flashover or rollover, or running out of air. When any of these situations
occurs, quick and decisive action is necessary. The best thing that can happen
is if the Firefighter in danger saves themselves. In other situations they may
be unprepared or unable to save themselves. Other Firefighters must be able to
rescue or offer assistance to the person in trouble.
The Rapid Intervention Team is a team of Firefighters whose sole
purpose is to locate and rescue any endangered, trapped, or missing
Firefighters. They may also perform tasks that aid and speed the rescue or
assistance of a Firefighter, and improve fire ground safety. When they are
called on to rescue a Firefighter in danger, they are going in harms way,
entering in the worst conditions possible. They must have the knowledge and
skills necessary to provide rescue or assistance, as well as the training to be
able to solve problems and rescue themselves if needed.
The Rapid Intervention course curriculum consists of 4-1
day, 8 hour sessions, that can be delivered individually, in progressive order,
or combined together to provide complete Rapid Intervention Training.
Sessions one, two & three maybe offered at your facility.

Session 3 - Rapid Intervention
(Operations Level) - "Search for Missing Firefighters"
This session expands upon the basic firefighter rescue skills
taught in session 2, and provides additional training in the search procedures,
locating and removal of missing firefighters. When a firefighter is lost,
missing, or unaccounted for on the fire ground, the type of search and actions
use are based on the missing firefighters assignment, last known location,
access, area size, floor lay out and obstructions. Knowing and choosing the
proper method of search ensures an efficient search that rapidly accesses,
locate, and removes the firefighter in danger. Searches and Evolutions include
deploying and using search ropes, hose line based search, search for VES person,
thermal imaging lead search, thermal imaging directed search, large area search,
team search, and long distance removals, some of which are conducted in a
training building with smoke generators.
